Update -- July 18, 2008

Dear Divers, Parents, and Supporters,

Believe it or not, "summer" is almost over, as the public schools are about to enter their last week of vacation (and we poor shlubs who teach go back on Thursday, July 24 :).  Ahh, I miss the old school calendar when we were on vacation until the third week of August!

Anyhoo, lotsa happenings in July.  We've seen some new people try diving, and some old friends leave.  We've welcomed some people back from trips. We've battled ear infections and pool closures (both Kaiser and Schofield).

Most exciting, we found out that MAUI is going to host a meet (first time since 2002).  Many on the team have already expressed excitement and interest in the May 9th event.  I will be staying the whole weekend to do a trampoline spotting clinic for the Maui community, and will have access to a free 2 bedroom condo so I am open to chaperoning anyone who needs it (can do a "boys' room" and a "girls' room").  In terms of picking up at airport or Superferry, getting people to the meet, and getting people back to the airport/harbor Saturday after the meet or Sunday morning, we can probably make this happen.

I will likely be going out Friday night to take advantage of my benefits through my teaching job (I supervise the Maui-based students who attend our school on their flight home).  Hawaiian has $64 each way fares available, Go seems to be $69-$84, Island Air $69-79, and SuperFerry has $49 each way fares, departing at 6:30 AM from HNL and returning from Kahului at 8 PM (arriving Honolulu 11 PM).

HIGHLIGHTS FROM JULY

WELCOME to Deja, Devante, and Dimitrios, who all started up this month, and will hopefully be continuing members of the team.

WELCOME BACK to Michaelle, a former Kaiser High diver who has started up again this summer and Emily, who's been on a LOOONG trip to the mainland.

CONGRATULATIONS to alumna Aleia, who qualified for the USA Diving Summer Senior Nationals on 1M for the first time, and on platform for the third time.

NEW DIVE PROPS to Tate for 101C 3M, 101B 1M, and 401B 1M; Kai for 5223D 1M and 203B 1M, Joanna for 612B 5M, Linnet for 401B, 103B, and 612C 5M, Ashley for 5231D 3M, and Coach Jeff for 5233D and 404C 5M (not renewed...they are actually NEW for him, even at age almost-42).

UPCOMING EVENTS

UH has not to do the one-week joint diving camp I mentioned last time.  Bummer :(

UH will be playing host to Canadian Olympians Alexandre Despatie and Arturo Miranda next week.  I don't know their training schedule yet, but will try to find out for y'all...would be AWESOME to go see them train!  In Canada, Alex is a rock star, with fans mobbing him outside his training pool, a contract with McDonald's restaurants, and a budding acting career.

Maui is hosting the meet mentioned above.  Click here for the meet info.

I think we may host a meet in later August, but it will be lowkey, and maybe just intrasquad.  I'll letchall know.
