Update -- April 30, 2008
Dear Divers, Parents, and Supporters,
Sorry it's been so long since the last update...despite several nice happenings, April was not quite the triumphant month I'd been expecting, and I haven't gotten into the spirit of writing much...
First the lowlights of the month -- Joanna injured herself and had to sit out most of the month (YAY for her first workout back, just last Tuesday), and BJ did not get to compete at the Spring Nationals.
Now for the highlights: first, we have two new divers -- Victor and Roberto. Welcome to the program, guys! Coach Jeff also started April coming off his judging stint at the Men's NCAA Championships, and found out he was on the short list of candidates to judge the Olympic Trials. he was also asked to become a Coach Development Instructor with USA Diving and will be judging the upcoming USA FINA Grand Prix event in Fort Lauderdale, FL, next week. Several divers have also been making some great strides. Tate and Emily have braved the 5M and seem to love it up there. Khoral (down at Kaiser High) is about to do her 301C independently. Cristin, also down at Kaiser, has learned 201A, 301A, and 202A. Alena has her 002C 3M independently. Linnet has learned her 301C 3M and her 302C 3M -- now all she needs is a twister, and she has a Junior list both boards! Amanda has re-learned her 202A and is about ready to start twisting on it. Ashley has started to turn a positive corner in terms of her form (especially her feet :). Kai (Kaiser) is riding the board better than ever and will soon be doing his 403B and 105C 1M. Samantha has added some tricks to her 002A 3M, and is getting ready for her 002C, while also learning her 202C.
Spring Invite Highlights
We had beautiful weather for what turned into a dual meet between UH Sunshine and Tropic Lightning. The parents did a WONDERFUL job keeping the table running smoothly, and we again turned three events around within 3 hours. Go us!
The divers also did a great job. Tate competed skills for the first time without needing any assistance, and did so on both 1M and 3M. Emily won a close contest against the UH divers on 1M and nailed her 200C 3M for 6-7s. Samantha hit her newly learned 202C 1M for 5s. Linnet competed Junior for the first time on 1M and showed many new dives (301C, 403C -- remember to change the fulcrum next time :) on 3M. Alena did her newly learned 402C, and did it for 5s. Ashley competed against veteran Maria, and split the difference. She took 3M in a close race and finished second by an even narrower margin on 1M.
Upcoming
Coach Jeff has been honored to be selected as a judge for the USA Grand Prix event in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Thursday - Sunday, May 8-11. He leaves on Wednesday, May 7 Monday, May 12. So, enjoy a few days off!
The HDA Championships are coming up the weekend of May 31 (that's what we've been told -- haven't seen the paperwork on it yet, but please, folks, keep that weekend free. It will likely be a Saturday-only event).
June has the Aloha State Games, the Regional Championships (in Tucson, AZ, June 13-15 or or in Santa Clara, CA, June 20-22, depending on if Jeff is selected to judge the Olympic Trials), the Keo Nakama Invitational, and the Olympic Trials in Indianapolis (maybe coach Jeff as a judge).
July has the Junior Zone E Championships in Los Angeles.
