Update -- February 2, 2009

Dear Divers, Parents, and Supporters,

High School regular season is history...post-season is upon us, and we have six team members moving on to the Hawaii High School Association State Championships -- Seniors Kainoa Lopes, Beau Brians, and Madison Cole (in descending order of tenure with the program); Sophomores Ashley Maginot and Cristin Lim; and Freshman Maria Zarka (on loan from Sunshine Diving during the high school season :).

It has been a pretty wonderful season so far, and we hope to see it continue at Central Oahu Regional Park's Veteran's Memorial Aquatic Center on Friday, February 13 at 9:00 AM and Saturday, February 14, at 8:30 AM.  Come support the team members if you can!

OK, on to recent results:

ILH and OIA Championships

Friday afternoon saw the ILH Championships, at Iolani School, and Saturday afternoon saw the OIA Championships at CORP.  TLDT divers did an AMAZING job!

All four of our divers in the ILH met earned personal bests -- Allia with a 269 in her first-ever varsity event, Cristin with her first-ever over-300 score (318), Maria with her eking-on-up-there 337, and Ashley with her 341.  In addition to these personal bests, Ashley and Maria made it onto the awards stand with the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Allia threw two new dives, her 5122D and her 302C, to complete her list. Although she did not have the DD, she did make the state qualifying score, so she should be a shoo-in next year when she has some more training under her belt.

Cristin was on fire!  She earned 6s and higher on all her vols, and hit her "meet dive" (she can't do it in practice, but nails it in competition) 5122D for 5.5-6s, her increasingly consistent 403C for 5-5.5s.

Maria started off kinda shaky, but started to gather steam toward the end.  Her 303C for 5.5s was her best-yet competed, as was her 5231D for 5s, and her debut 5223D for 5.5s secured her the bronze.

Ashley put together awesome form on every 10 of her 11 dives.  She fully pointed her toes on her 201B, 203C, and 301C,  earning 6s-7s on all three.  She also hit a very nice 102B, before almost giving away her silver on a funky 5211A.

In the OIA meet, our three stalwarts did a very nice job.

Veteran
Kai continued his dominance, breaking 400 for the third time this season (409), and performing his best-ever 403B, 303C and 5231D for 6.5-7s.

Beau earned a PB of 364, with a number of outstanding dives.  He nailed his 103B for 6.5s, his 403B for 5.5s, his debut 203C for 6s, his 5231D for 6.5s, and his debut 5223D for 5-5.5s.

Madison overcame a troubling warmup to do a very solid job in the event.  She had the inward one and a half of the meet (6.5-7s) and did her 203C for 5-5.5s after completely freaking on it just before the meet.  Her vols were solid for 5.5-6s, and she ended on a high note with a great 103B for 6.5-7s and a PB of 342.

REGIONALS UPDATE

I have found some pretty good fares on American Airlines, departing March 5 at 10:30 PM and returning March 8 at 7:30 PM.  Total with taxes was $380, so I suggest you jump on it!

There will practice Friday afternoon.  We will look at doing a trip to Magic Mountain Saturday after the meet :)  Should be an awesome time!

I have decided to modify the requirements for representing us at Regionals to "average DD of 2.0" instead of setting the minimum for each optional at 2.0.  However, I am also going to set the deadline for learning those optionals as Monday, February 16.  Those of you who have not been making the weekend workouts are advised to start doing so, or reconsider going to Regionals, particularly if they have many more dives to learn.

Those with 2.0 average optionals so far:  Kai (both boards), Ashley (both boards), Joanna (both boards), Madison (1M -- one more dive 3M), Beau (1M), Cristin (1M).  Linnet and Alena are close 1M but are still working to get dives without calls, and both have a number of dives to learn 3M.

ASL CORNER

Recently reinstated, as Coach Jeff's foster son, former and apparently future diver (he said on Friday evening he wants to start again) is deaf and will be a presence at many workouts and meets, this reference is here so you all can learn to communicate with our deaf community member: check out the ASL Corner,  do the lessons as you want to, ask me for help as you need.

Okies, That's all for now!

Jeff
