Update -- February 16, 2009

Dear Divers, Parents, and Supporters,

High School Season is completely over, and we are back to the normal T-Th and one day on the weekend schedule at Schofield from now on.  We only have three weeks before Regionals, so let's get on it and be fully ready to compete well!

OK, here's some highlights from the HHSAA State Championships:

State Championships

Beau -- wow, he really showed he's got the talent it would take to become a solid collegiate diver -- his 103B and his 403B earned 7-7.5s, his 401B earned 6.5s, and his 5231D earned 6.5s-7s.  He also conquered the 5132D demon from last season by performing it for 5s this year, and added a whole slew of new dives to his repertoire (105C, 5223D, 403B, 203C).  He also moved up from 6th place last year to 4th this year (in a field of all greatly improved divers).  What a great way to cap off his HS diving career!

Kai -- we all knew it would be neck-and-neck between Kai and Punahou's Spencer Madanay for the Boy's title, and it came out that way -- fewer than 7 points separated these two promising athletes, each of whom has only been diving for a few years.  Kai nailed all of his voluntaries, with his lowest scoring one -- 5231D, earning 6.5-7s, and his highest scoring one, 201B, commanding 7.5s-8.5s.   He also performed his 403B for 7s-8s and put down his troublesome 5225D for 5.5-6s and his brand-new 404C for 5s.  In the end, though, he took silver behind the more consistent, if less spectacular, Spencer.  However, he showed he has what it takes to become one of the nation's premier divers if he sticks with it and dedicates himself.  He has the power, the flexibility, the height, and the form to do it all.

Madison -- wow, the model of consistency.  10 of her 11 dives earned between 5s and 6s.  She has great form and ability, she just needs to add some JUMP into her diving to bump it up to the next level.  As a graduating senior, she has a solid base to bring with her to intercollegiate diving, and will be gaining even more experience as she competes in club diving throughout the spring and summer.

Cristin -- did an incredible job, despite being sick, and moved up from last year's 7th place finish to this year's 6th place, while increasing her score by about 20 points and breaking 300 for the first time at the big show.  She opened the meet with what was arguably the best dive of the girls' contest, her 401B for 7.5s, and continued her inward dominance with a 403C for 6-6.5s.  She has added a great deal of difficulty to her list this year, including her really newly learned 5231D and 203C, and is going to be a major force next year as she gets more comfortable with these dives.
Ashley -- out-dived the field on the 10 dives she did perform (203C for 5.5s, 201B, 301B, and 104C for 6s, 302C and 102B for 6.5s, 103B and 401B for 6.5-7s, 403C for 7s), but a lapse in brain function caused her to not change a dive in her list and leave in a dive she has issues competing.  Flustered, she missed that dive completely -- 0 points.  However, she not only learned a valuable lesson in personal responsibility, she outscored her last year's State's total and nearly equaled her personal best even without an 11th dive.  She also proved to herself how competitive she can be in this sport, and is now in a mind set to really go after the harder dives it will take to be the great diver she can be.

Maria -- really solid performance from her as a freshman, with some outstanding dives (103B for 7-7.5s, 401B for 7s, 201B for 6.5s, 5122D for 6-6.5s, 5231D for 5.5s, 203B and 303C for 5-5.5s).  Her swingy 301B , which went over for 4.5s, cost her the silver and placed her 4th -- it was that close!  She has a great future ahead of her, though :)

TUNE-UP MEET and OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS

We will be hosting a tune-up meet for Regionals in two weeks, on Saturday, February 28 from 10 AM until 1 PM.  I expect every member of the team who is going to Regionals to be a part of the tune-up, and hope that the rest of the team members will also participate.  If you have not yet registered for USA Diving this season, please do so RIGHT AWAY, so you will be eligible to compete.

Maui Diving is also planning to host a meet at the beginning of the DOE schools' Spring Break (March 21).  What a great opportunity to spend some time on Maui after the meet as well -- peak whale-watching season, and tons of fun things to do, and most of us have some time off to do it as well!

REGIONALS UPDATE

The following divers have earned the 2.0 average optional DD minimum that I have set as the qualifying standard to go to Regionals on the following boards.  If you have made the DD minimum on one board, I will consider allowing you to compete on the other board as long as you compete a qualifying list at our Tune-Up event on Saturday, February 28 in that event.

Both Boards:  Ashley (congrats on 303C 3M), Joanna (congrats on 203A 3M), Kai, Madison (congrats on 203A 3M)

One Meter Only:  Alena (congrats on 203C 1M and 203A 3M), Brandon (congrats on re-learning your whole 1M list in one week), Linnet (congrats on 104C 1M looking much better and doing it without a call)

(Suggested 3M optional lists for Alena, Brandon, and Linnet -- Alena:  104C, 403C, 203A, 303C; Brandon -- 105C/B, 405C, 203B, 303C/B, 5132D; Linnet:  403C/B 5231D, 105C or 203C/B/A or 303C.

I have found some pretty good fares on American Airlines, departing March 5 at 10:30 PM and returning March 8 at 7:30 PM.  Total with taxes was $380, so I suggest you jump on it!  I have already booked it for me and for BJ.

There will practice Friday afternoon.  We will look at doing a trip to Magic Mountain Saturday after the meet :)  Should be an awesome time!

ASL CORNER

Recently reinstated, as Coach Jeff's foster son, former and apparently future diver (he said on Friday evening he wants to start again) is deaf and will be a presence at many workouts and meets, this reference is here so you all can learn to communicate with our deaf community member: check out the ASL Corner,  do the lessons as you want to, ask me for help as you need.

Okies, That's all for now!

Jeff
