Update -- October 6, 2008

Dear Divers, Parents, and Supporters,

I am taking advantage of the public school's Fall Break to type up this month's update :)

The USA Diving Convention was, as usual, a busy and productive time.  And this year had three representatives from the HDA -- me, Mike Brown, and Anita Rossing.  The last time we has three representatives at Convention was in '01!  Many folks said that they had noticed the increase in the number of divers in our association.  Congrats on doing your part to help get the numbers up!

On that note -- make sure to renew your memberships between now and December 31 for a "discount."  USA Diving has changed the membership year from Jan 1- Dec 31 to Oct 1-Aug 31, and those who renew BEFORE Jan 1 will pay a pro-rated fee.

Speaking of involvement in USA Diving, the Hawaii Diving Association Meeting is coming up on Saturday, October 11.  It will be held at 2 PM at UH.  All interested parties are encouraged to attend, and we should have a club athlete rep -- someone who has participated at the Junior level or higher in the HDA Championships and who is interested in helping to shape the direction the HDA takes.  I will discuss this with the team this week.

And we will host a meet the day AFTER Halloween -- All Saints' Day -- because I have a wedding in NYC on October 25th.  Soooo, don't eat too much candy, and we'll have our usual "theme" event with special meet formats!  We'll spend a lot of time this month preparing y'all for the special event.

Oh, and as I am off work this week, I have decided to do special daily workouts to help jump start you in terms of getting ready for this meet :)  They will be held at the regular times because some of you go to private schools, or year-round schools, or are home-schooled and do not have the same break schedule :/  I was HOPING to do the workouts during a warmer time of the day, but c'est la vie :)

SEPTEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Tate is still working out the kinks on her 201A and 102C, but getting there!  Roberto has devised some strategies to deal with adversity.  Kellar and Kacie learned 401C (spotted) and 201A 1M independently.  Mikayla has learned 401C 1M independently.    Dimi got his  103C and 301C 3M.  Jace learned his 5221D.   Alena learned 201B, 302C and 5211A 3M and now has a Junior list up there.  Joanna learned 5132D 3M as well as 201C and 301C 5M.  Linnet learned 201C and 612B 5M, as well as 202B 1M.  Ashley is re-gaining control over her lines, and is jumping a mile on her 101B and 103B.  She also learned 201B 5M and 104B 1M.  Kai has gotten 5132D 1M and 3M, and is getting ready to dive in 303B 3M.    Madison has learned 403C 1M and moved on to "minimal" spot reverse dives.  Coach Jeff has still not been able to train as much 3M and Platform as he'd like to, but has gotten off his newly re-learned 303B 1M and 5331D 1M.

UPCOMING EVENTS

HDA Meeting Saturday, October 11, 2PM, UH.  All are welcome to attend!

"The Nightmare After Halloween" meet -- November 1.  Possible trip to Long Beach, CA, November 8-9 for the Glenn McCormick Invite.  Definite trip to Mission Viejo, CA, for the Chris Vonk Memorial, December 6-7.

High School Season starts in November, and we will be changing schedule after the HDA Championships in December -- when the pool gets really cold, we will likely go to weekends only for winter, and return to normal schedule in March.  I recommend that young'uns take a break during the cold months so they don't end up hating diving because of the weather!
