Interscholastic Diving 2007-2008

One of the good things about our sport is that it is a part of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.  As such, there are opportunities to represent your school and compete weekly during the scholastic season.  Private schools compete in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.  Public schools compete in the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

Congrats to Punahou's Kathryn and Dylan, the 2008 State Champions.  Kathryn pretty much dominated the event, while Dylan pulled out a squeaker over perennial rival Kimo from Kamehameha.  Cheyenne from Maui High and Nikki from Punahou rounded out the top three for girls, while Josh from Kamehameha picked up the bronze for the boys.  And all the divers were able to show their stuff in the diving show that we put on during the break in the swimming events.  It was a grand spectacle, and really helped all of us come together as a family and highlight our talents.  The swimming community noticed -- several coaches have commented on what a great show it was!

Good luck at States to all the qualifiers! Apologies to Aleksander from Maui for not looking at his MIL Championships sheets carefully -- he earned a great score, but did not have the difficulty to qualify for states :(

Here are the qualifiers for States in alphabetical order (diving order will be randomly drawn at the meet):

Girls:  Kathryn Chinn, Caitlin Currameng,  Cecilia Durocher, Chelaine Eliazar, Brandee Goo, Nikki Kumura, Cristin Lim, Sheyenne Machida, Ashley Maginot, Lori Nishikawa, Juliet Salsedo.

Boys:  Ryan Brem, Beau Brians, Mark Brians, Dylan Jude, James Keawe, Connor Logsdon, Kainoa Lopes, Joshua Tavares.

The OIA held its Last Chance meet today at Kaiser High School.  Thank you to all the volunteers and coaches who came out to run the event.  Mark Brians, who had improved an average of 25 points per meet in his last two season competitions, dived a consistent list to eke out 263 points, just over the consideration standard.  Mark nailed his 302C for 5.5s and hit his newest dive, his 104C, for 4.5s. He did a solid job on the rest of his list.  Congrats to Mark!  Beau started showing his stuff on his 403C, which he hit for all 6s, and debuted his new 5231D for 4.5s (and he is hoping to get a 203C by states as well :)  he also did MUCH improved 5223D.  Kai, diving exhibition, debuted his 303C, which is still a work in progress, but we will be looking to get it solid by states!  He also did a fantastic set of inwards, hitting both 401B and 403C for 7s, and improved his 5231D.  Cecilia didn't get much practice in, but started off like gangbusters on her twisters, hitting her 5111A for 6.5s and her 5221D for 6-6.5s.  She also nailed her 103B for 6.5s.

The ILH held its Last Chance meet today at Punahou School.  Thank you to all the volunteers and coaches who came out to run the event.  Iolani's Cristin Lim and Kamehameha's Juliet Salsedo, both of whom had "close but no cigar" events in their varsity debuts at last week's ILH Championships, dived much more comfortably in their second official Varsity contest and each of them earned qualifying standards to the state meet.  Calla McCarthy of Punahou also dived in her first varsity event.

Cristin was consistent for mostly sixes, did a much mechanically-improved 5111A, and nailed her final dive, her 104C, to win the event.  Juliet debuted a new 301B (she obviously feels more comfortable with this one than her tuck :) added  some pressing actions on her 5211A and 201A, and nailed her 403C.  Calla continued her 301A streak, nailing that dive for 6s.

As of the end of this event, the ILH has a grand total of eight girls (Chelaine Eliazar, Kathryn Chinn, Nikki Kumura, Ashley Maginot, Samantha Gabriel, Brandee Goo, Cristin Lim, and Juliet Salsedo) and three boys (James Keawe, Dylan Jude, and Joshua Tavares) qualified to the State Championships.

Maui:  Although I haven't gotten details from the Maui diving folks in a while, I perused the Maui results site, and see that all of the active high school divers from Maui have achieved state qualifying standards!  There are three girls (Sheyenne Machida, Caitlin Currameng, and Lori Nishikawa ) and two boys (Connor Logsdon, Ryan Brem).

2/13/08:

At the ILH Championhips last Friday, Chelaine of Punahou  fended off a strong charge from teammate Kathryn to win the ILH title.  Nikki, also of Punahou, finished third.  Kathryn and last week's JV Champ Ashley (of Pac-5) both earned official state qualifying scores in their varsity debuts.  Punahou's Brandee made it official, with a full on state qualifying score.  Cristin of Iolani and Juliet of Kamehameha were very close to the consideration scores, and made the case for a last chance meet, to be held later this week.

On the Boys's side, Kamehameha's James earned a PB and won handily.  Punahou's Dylan took the silver, throwing the best 105C and 5132D he's ever done, and Kamehameha's Joshua made the most of a schedule change in his play schedule and earned a qualifying score en route to the bronze.  Last week's JV Champ, Brady, also of Kamehameha Schools, made his varsity debut as well.

Dives of the Meet:  Chelaine's 301A for 7.5s-8s, James' 201A for 7.5s-8s, Dylan's 5132D for 6-6.5s, Kathryn's 104C for 6.5-7s, Ashley's 403C for 5.5-6.5s.

2/7/08:

At the OIA Championhips earlier today, Cecilia bested her last week's score and got a new season high of 333, nailing her 303C and her 203B along the way.  Kai debuted 2 new dives (203C and 5231D) an route to becoming a much stronger candidate at States.  Mark threw his 104C and now has the DD for states...He also improved his scores over 20 points in EACH of the last two meets, and if he continues on that trend, might make it three for the Kaiser boys in terms of state qualifiers.  Beau had a really good meet as well, earning a PB of 294 (and being within 10 points of Kai)  and finally hitting a smooth 403C.

The results of the Feb 2 ILH JV and Intermediate Champs are official (sorry about the delay...had some errors to fix and verify).  Our '08 Champs are...Allia from Pac-5 and Spencer from Punahou in the Intermediate events, and Ashley Maginot from Pac-5 and Brady Magaoay from Kamehameha Schools in JV.  There were many fine performances, particularly on the girls' side.

Intermediate girls' highlights: Allia was a sight to behold on her jumps for 6.5-7.5s and the rest of her dives earning mostly 6s and above.  Taylor's 401C capped off her list with a 7.  Caroline was Miss Consistent and had a beautiful 201A.  Anna started to exude some confidence in her abilities during the later part of the season, and jumped well on her 301C.  Amy did a spectacular 5211A.  Khoral was equally impressive on her 402C.   Jennifer debuted some new dives and was really consistent.  Marissa hit her 101C for 5s.  Victoria showed incredible promise with her jumps and on her 401B.  And Reed got a six dive list together :)

Intermediate Boys' Highlights:  Spencer did the best 403C he's done yet, and keeps showing he knows how to land his 203C.  Martin's 200A SKYED!  And Andrew started like gangbusters on his 100A for 6-6.5s

JV Girls' highlights:  Ashley did her best-ever 104C and 403Cs for mostly 6s.  Kathryn  had a stellar 101B for 6.5-7.5s.  Cristin was very consistent en route to her bronze, with 6s on four of her dives.  Calla nailed her 301A and took off from there for a great list.  Anita debuted her 5124D.  Juliet  from came back from her broken foot to do some really great (and unique) dives like her 5111C.  Hannah  had a beautiful 202A.  Courtney did a solid 101C in the first competition she's been in this year.

JV Boys' Highlights:  Brady wowed us with a high, controlled 301C.  Cameron impressed with the control he showed on his 101C.  Kameron's 103C was high and smooth.

The OIA East and West Champs were held February 2 at Kaiser, with Cecilia of Pearl City earning a season high of 322.  Kai, Beau, and Mark of Kaiser had solid meets, with the brothers earning PBs and Beau also earning his provisional state qualifying score.

1/27/08:

The Serai Invitational was a huge (23 divers, with 11 doing varsity lists!) affair, involving both the public and private schools of Oahu and lasting from 12:30 until after 6 PM!  The small public school contingent represented well, earning two third places from Cecilia Durocher and Kai Lopes (who was pretty close to second!).  Varsity Champions were Chelaine Eliazar and James Keawe, reasserting themselves as front runners going into states...Kathryn Chinn won her first JV event and earned her first state qualifying standard as an exhibition diver, and most of the others who have previously earned qualifying scores did so again this week.  Brady  Magaoay cliched the Boys' JV event.  A fantastic debut by Intermediate diver Allia Alliata of Pac-5 highlighted the day -- she was amazing to watch and was perhaps the only competitor to earn all 7s and above on more than one dive.  Spencer Madanay returned to form this week for yet another impressive victory, and debuted a 5132D!

Maui sent some results from their MIL #3, and Lori and Ryan earned their first qualifying scores, with Conner earning the standard yet again.  This brings Maui's girls' total to three state qualifiers so far, and the boys' total to two.  (Oahu has six girls and three boys).

1/21/08:

Maui sent us some information!  You can link to the MIL Schedule and Results at Maui Dolphins.  Connor Logsdon qualified for the State meet last week, and Caitlyn (I have seen three different spellings of your name in various results...I hope this is the right one!) Curammeng qualified for states!  Connor has learned 403B and 303C, stepping it up for this season!  Maui has an Invitational this weekend, on the same day as the Sandra Serai, so we probably will not all be together again until States.

1/19/08:

OIA Relays (aka, Battle of the Sexes, since there was only one boys' event entry, Kaiser, and there were no girls' event entries, so we made a team of Pearl City and Kaiser):  GIRLZ RULE!  Cecilia and Malena beat Kai and Mark (gotta work harder, boys!  hehe).  Actually, everyone dived well, and Kainoa Lopes earned his state qualifying standard, while Cecilia bettered her last meet's score by 20 points and Mark bettered his by 6, even with a failed dive!  Malena made her debut, and learned a lot as she dived, earning higher scores toward the end.

ILH Meet at Iolani:  Brandee Goo and Samantha-Lynn Gabriel earned provisional state qualifying scores!  Chelaine dived to a personal best (what a 104B!  and what an improved 303C!), regaining her crown from Nikki.  Kimo dethroned Dylan.  Ashley and Dylan threw new optionals (Ashley - 403B and 203C, Dylan, 403B).  Ashley has gone 3 for 3 in terms of JV events this season.   Taylor won her second Intermediate title of the season, while Anna started to show her stuff in the Intermediate Division.  Amy did the best mechanical 5211A of the meet (except maybe Kimo's).  Reed learned a new dive, and has only one more to go so she has a complete Intermediate list :)

1/15/08:

-- This weekend's meets have changed times!  ILH meet at Iolani starts at 1 PM (boards open at 11:30, JV voluntary is inward) and the OIA Relays start at 9:30 AM (boards open at 8 AM).

-- Apologies to Cecilia Durocher for the misspelling of her name  last week.  Congrats to this weekend's ILH Invite Champions -- Taylor Moss and Spencer Madanay for Intermediate, Ashley Maginot and Avi Kaye for JV, and Nikki Kumura and Dylan Jude for Varsity.

-- Outstanding dives noted this week:  Taylor's 401C for 7s; Spencer's 200A for 8s, 203C for 6.5s,and 5223D for 7s; Chelaine's 5132D for 5.5-6s; Nikki's 201A, 301A and 5221D for 7s; James' 204C for 6s; Dylan's 203B with a good stretch on the entry (sorry - can't remember the scores :)

1/5/08:

-- Congrats to the following divers who all qualified for the State Championships by virtue of their performances at the Kalani Invitational:  Girls --Chelaine Eliazar, Nikki Kumura, Sheyenne Machida, Cecilia Derocher, and Ashley Maginot; Boys -- Dylan Jude and James Keawe.
