Hawaii Diving Association Meeting Minutes, 2/24/2007

I.                      Call To Order 11:11 AM

a.       Present:  Mike Brown, Anita Rossing, Micah Ewing, Jeff Stabile, Wally Nakamoto, Leve Watson, Dennis Rowe, Lei Chong, Carol Henry

II.                   Officer/Committee Reports

a.       President

                                                               i.      This is first meeting since last fall’s elections…haven’t done much business since then

b.       Vice President –

                                                               i.      Group Member Club Information Sheets are Available.  I am passing them out to anyone who has/is thinking of forming a club.  This info is required by HDA for voting at meetings, as well as a tool for recruiting new HDA Members.

                                                              ii.      Athlete reps – age limit of 16 or not?  Discussion ensued, Anita noted that the HDA by-laws do not require that athlete reps be 16, so younger athletes may serve

                                                            iii.      Association (and other) Meets – will refer to this later in the New Business

c.       Treasurer

                                                               i.      I have not gotten the association registered financially yet.  Got the check from USA Diving via registration chair Jeff Stabile for $135 (the money that came from the 4 athlete registrations that we had last year) and have gotten other financial info from former treasurer Leve Watson

                                                              ii.      Need physical address for the association (will use the Brown/Rossing)

d.       Secretary –

                                                               i.      Sent out agenda, will send out minutes for each meeting and develop roster/send out hard copies as well as post agendas, minutes and roster on the HDA section of my team website (www.tropiclightningdiving.com/had.html).  Will happily transfer to a HDA-dedicated site should the body decide to obtain a domain name and maintain it (I can do this through AOL, probably).

e.       Senior

                                                               i.      No registrations as of this year, no senior activities as of yet

f.        Junior

                                                               i.      Two registrations this year, from Sunshine Diving (as of last week, per Anita Rossing;  I haven’t gotten confirmation from USA Diving about them yet)

g.       Registration

                                                               i.      Starting January 1, 2007, all registration and sanctioning is done online;  the National Office will then inform me as to the Association’s registration and sanctioning activities. 

1.        I will follow up, again (did so once already in early January after Leve Watson inquired as to sanctioning procedures for his proposed meet series) with the National Office regarding when the online sanctioning will actually take place, since nothing seems clear or obvious on the website, and pass on the info as soon as I get it.

                                                              ii.      The body discussed timelines (basically, getting information to member clubs such that sufficient notice is given about events and teams can plan to attend competitions).

h.       Convention Delegate

                                                               i.      Referred to the Report that was sent out to members and asked if there were any questions.  Offered to re-send wither electronic or hard copies to anyone who requests them.

IV.                  Old Business

a.       Election of Masters’ Chair

                                                               i.       Nomination of Carol Henry by Anita Rossing, seconded by Jeff Stabile.

                                                              ii.      With no other candidates offered, nominations were closed

                                                            iii.      Carol Henry voted Masters’ Chair unanimously

V.                   New Business

a.       Establish Calendar/Sites of Events

                                                               i.      Association Meets (this became expanded and included discussions of all meets to be held under jurisdiction of HDA as well as unsanctioned events generally supported by HDA member teams)

1.        Invite Series –

a.        Wallace Nakamoto, March 17, practice on March 16, at Central Oahu Regional Park

b.       Keo Nakama, July 4-5, practice on July 3, at CORP

c.        Keala O’Sullivan, Sept 1-2, practice on August 31, at CORP

2.        Aloha State Games June 3

a.        Date of June 3 agreed upon by body

b.       Site:  UH, with backup site of CORP (UH pool supposed to be under construction this summer, so alternative site might be needed).

3.        Spring Association

a.        Date of Sunday, April  29,  agreed upon by body

b.       Site:  UH, CORP as backup

4.        Regional/Zone Events

a.        Region 9 officials asked us to consider hosting either the Spring or Summer Regionals. We respectfully decline, and Jeff Stabile will inform the Region 9 Chair

b.       USA Diving had no bids for the 2008 Senior Zone D Championships, and asked Hawaii to consider hosting.  We respectfully decline, and Jeff Stabile will inform the National Office

b.       Membership Expansion/Promoting of Sport

                                                               i.      Safety Certification Challenge:  Saturday, March 10, at CORP  (run by Leve Watson.  Potential class members:  Micah Ewing, Wally Nakamoto, Dennis Rowe, TD Rowe, Lei Chong)

                                                              ii.      CPR  certification, Saturday, March 3 at CORP (run by Leve Watson).  Members advised that MDs can get a waiver for first aid and CPR requirements by contacting the National Office, and that CPR and First Aid classes run by Red Cross and American Heart Association also count – these certifications do not have to come from within USA Diving)

                                                            iii.      Pool Database

1.        After some discussion of specific sites, particularly Kaneohe District Park Pool and a couple of pools on the Big Island, as well as mention of an already-established list of sites that Leve Watson has compiled, Mike Brown asked that members send information in to him, electronically, whih include the following information:

a.        name

b.       location

c.        contact person name/info

d.       diving equipment currently at facility

                                                            iv.      Table Work/Computer Training

1.        Leve will going to Colorado Timing on June 14-15 to get trained on the tech side.  Some time after that, we will have a training.

VI.                 Announcements

a.       “Centennial Celebration” Pro High Diving Show

                                                               i.      This is an opportunity for local springboard divers to participate in a paid diving show in Honolulu March 29-April 1.

b.       Clinics

                                                               i.      Mike Brown suggested that HDA hold clinics to help members in any ways desired/needed, especially given the world-class nature of some of the UH divers, and our ability to take advantage of them as a resource for our learning

                                                              ii.      Carol Henry suggested a Judging Clinic

                                                            iii.      Jeff Stabile suggested Mechanics and Spotting Clinics
